- Mr and Mrs G. MoHattie, who hare been on a visit to England and Scotland, returned to MasterJ:on on Tuesday eveuing.

Up to the present only one civil case is set down f<w hearing at tbe sitting of the Wairarapa District Court on November 16tb. Six bankrupts will apply for their disobatges from bankruptcy.

At the meeting of tbe Board of Management of the Y.M.C.A., las* evening, the President (Mr P. L. Boilings) creseuted Mr A. J. Parton, who is shortly to be married, with a handsome set of carvers, on behalf of the members of the Board of Management. Mr Parton suitably acknowledged tbe gift.

At the Canterbury Show, yesterday, Mr W. Howard Booth, of Carterton, secured three flfst prizes, two special prizes, and one seoond prize, out of four entries, in fat sheep, Mr W. Perry, of Penrose, secured in Linuolns the first prize in young rams, the obampionship in rams, and a!so several second prizes.

The monthly meeting of the Yorkshire Society was held last evening. Mr E. H. Waddington oooupied the chair, and there was a large attendande of members. The Social Gommitteu reported that the recent social uad l)8en a auocess. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated, with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.

At the Masterton Presbyterian Church, yesterday, Mr fcj. . \f. Jenkins, third son of Mrs J. Jenkins, of M-aaterton, was married to Misa Mary Dunn. The bride was given away by Mr T. Thompson, ind wus attonded by Miss E. Eagle as bridesmaid. Mr H. Selby was best man, and the marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. A. T. Thompson. • /• Mr T. Ward, of Morison'a Bush, died on Tuesday. The deceased was born in Ireland in 1830. He arrived in New Zealand in 1863, and settled in the Wairnrapa iu 1861. Mrs Ward died about three years ago. Two -jona (Messrs T. and F. Ward) and three daugnters (Mesdames P. Hurley, H. Burgess, and Miss Ward) are left to moarn their loss.

Mr Bath Chitfy Dean, postmaster 'at Palmerston South, who was admitted to a private hospital, at Wellington, on Tuesday,- was found with his throat cut yesterday morning. The deceased was on sick leave, and on Tuesday evening, entered the private hospital for treatment.' At 6/30 yesterday morning he appeared to be all right, and took a oup of tea, but at 7.20 he was found as ntated. He was about 54 years of age. At the inquest the jury returned a verdiot that the deceased committed Huioido during a fit of temporary Insanity.

At yesterday, William Stephenson Aickin, charged. 1 with sending a threatening letter to the Premier, pleaded guilty. Replying to a request that he >e released ®n bail the Grown Prosecutor said he wonla consent if the sureties were substantial. -The offence was a serious one. The acoused had been shadowed by police for many months. He was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court, bail being allowed in two sureties of £SOO each. The accused was not to leave the province and to report himself to the polio® at 5 p.m. daily. The sureties were forthcoming.

FACTS ESTABLISHED AT COURT. In an action, the cause of which was flagrant misuse of our firm name and other gross misrepresentation by an imi tating company, which was tried before his Honor, Ch'ef Justice J. Madden, K.C.M.G., L.L.D., in the Supreme Court, at Melbourne, the prosecution showed:— 1. Captain Freeman's battery scored twelve hits out of twelve shots, while Jbieut. Ellis 1 battery scored eight bits out of twelve shots.

Ihe funeral of the late Miss H. Infield took place at the Mastertoa Cemetery, yesterday afternoon. The cortege was a large One, and included members of the Mastertoa Orchestral Society. A short serri3& was held at S. Matthew's Church. The Rev. A. M. Johnson conducted: the services at the Church and at tbe graveside.

According to a Press Association telegram, at the Magistrate's Court, at Carterton, on Tuesday, George A. B air brother was charged, on the information of tbe Law Society, with acting as conveyancer, contrary to the provisions of the Law Praotitloners Aot, and was fined by the Magistrate £5 and costs £5 17s. Leave to appeal was given.

Mr C. E. Briggs, of the Audit Department, died at Picton on Tuesday night. He was spending a holiday in that town, and, being taken suddenly ill, died while on the way to tne hospital. was sixty one years of age, and bad. been in the Audit Depatment for the past eleven years. He has left a • widow and family of four.

The death is announced/from London of the H»n. .Auberon E. W, Herbert, a well known journalist. Amongst the best known of the works written by Mr Herbert are:— "Politician in Trouble about his Soul," "Windfall and Waterdrift," "bad Air and Bad Health.'' The deceased, who represented Nottingham in tbe House of Commons from 1870 to 1873, was 68 years of age.

Latest advice received from Sydney states that wool freights [are now nine sixteenths of a penny for. greasy,, and eleven-sixteenths for scoured. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., an appeal from thedistrict in connection with a deal of sheep, their Honors agreed in finding that the< evidence was bo inconclusive that it was impossible to come, to any deoision satisfactory to 'them.. There were disputed questions of fact which ought to have gone to the jury and they decided that the proper courso was to order a new trial so that the facts could be determined. Sir John Logan Campbell, the "Father of Auckland,"who on Saturday last entered upon bis 90th year, states that he has never been sick in' his life, and has never had the toothache.
