It is not intended to erect bone sterilising works in the colony. The Government state that so far as can be gathered the present system of inspection at ports of shipment is working satisfactorily. The San Francisco mail steamer Ventura, which was due at Auokland on' Monday last according to timetable, did, not reach the northern port until yesterday morning. The Ventura,left San Francisco at 3.29 p.m. on 23rd August. She was delayed for eight hours and forty-five minutes at Pagopago for repairs to her machinery. The Auokland pilot ground was made at 3.30 yesterday morning after a passage of 471 hours. The Masterton portion of th«? mail will arrive this evening. Mr Tanner's Totalisator Permits Limitation Bill provides that it shall not be lawful for the Colonial Secretary to grant more than twothirds of the number of lioenses authorising the use of the totalisator that were issued during the year ended July 31st. Permits for the use of the totalisator are,to be issued for one day only, and separate permits will be required for any second, third, or other day. No permit whatever shall be issued which allows the use of the totalisator at any place on any one of the thirteen days set forth in the schedule of the Bank Holidays Act.
