MAURICEVILLE COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tbe usual meeting of the Gounuii was held on Saturday last, lhere were preseut:—Crs J. C. Cooper (chairman), C. 0. Jackson, aud 11. J. Dagg. Cr Hummer wroto from tbe Napier district requesting to be excused from attendance. Trie Secretary of the Now Zealand Counties Association wroto asking to be supplied with the name and address of delegate to tho approaching conference. Tbe Chairman and Or Jackson were appoiuted. The Premier acknowledged receipt ot tho 'Chairman's telegram relative to tbe death of the late Premier. A communication was received from the Lower llntt, Borough Council regarding the altoration in the railway routo between Wellington and vVaharapa, and deairiug the Council to appoint a delegate to join the deputation which will interview the Minister of Railways on the eubjeot. Councillors did not quite approve of the route proposed by the Lower tlutt Horough Council. Tho Chairman and Cr Jackson wore appoiuted to represent the Council oo the deputation. Mr K. McKay wrote pointing out dofectH iu the Maugarei Roafl, and asking for some repairs to be carried out. Mr D. Guild wrote directing attention of the Council to a part of the Wangaebu Road which is being negleoted by both tbe Mastertcu and Mauriceville County Councils, mid suggesting that one of the Councillors be deputed to meet him and fix a point at the frontage of section 52, to which the roadmen employed by either Council shall work. Cr Kumioer was appointed to arrange tbe matter with Mr Guild. The Clerk of the Collingwood County Council forwarded a copy of resolutions re making Government votes for road works available at the season ot tbe year most advan tageous for carrying out suoh work, aud requesting the 00-oper-ation of the Council in bringing the matter under the notice of the Government. No action was taken in tbe matter. Mr C. Anderson attended the meeting by u request with referenoe to his application for the position of ranger. After [dealing witn several other applications, it was decided to appoint Mr Anderson. - A large deputation of ratepayers interviewed the Council re the footpath on the side of the road adjacent to the overhead railway bridge near tho Mauriceville Railway Station. Mr T. Y. Hillas pointed out that this part of tbe road was constantly used by a larf?e section of the residents going to and from the Railway Station, School and Post Office, while tbe local body has done little, if anything, to ao commodate the numerous foot passengers inoessantly using this muddiest road in the district, and in fact the residents owe tbe present footpath, euoh as it is, to the late Wairarapa North County Counoil. Tbe Chairman and Councillors expressed their sympathy with the object of the deputation, and desired to meet their wishes as far as practicable. It was pointed out that it Whs impossible to widen tbe road aud care would bave to be exercised in extending the footpath so that the present uarrow roadway may not bo further restricted or otherwise injuriously affected. A committee, consisting of Messrs Hillas, R. and C. Brooks and J. MoKenzie, wero appointed to meet on the ground with Gra Jaokson and Kummer, with a view to devising tbe beat plan of carrying out necessary improvements to the footpath.

The Clerk was instructed to notify Messrs A. J3. Clarke and Q. .Bannister to remove the willows near the bridge on Jaokson'b Road. Or Dagg withdrew his motion re the inspection of road works, of which he gave notice at the last meeting, and the Clerk was direoted to invite Mr J. Swenson to meet the Council at next meeting with reference to the question of appointing an inspector. It was resolved to share equally with the Masterton County Counoil in fie cost of maintaining the suspension bridge over the Ruamahanga River to Mount Bruce Road. Cr Kummer was granted leave of absence. Accounts amounting to £297 19s 6d were passed for payment.
