POLICE METHODS IN LONDON.
THE D'ANGELY CASE,
SENSATIONAL EVIDENCE.
Received August 1, 8.45 a.m. LONDON, July 3IT Some sensalonal evideuce was given before the Royal Commission appointed to enquire into the manner in which the Metropolitan police, particularly in the West End, dealt with cases of drunkenness and solici tation in the streets and otherwise discharged their duties. The evidence dealt with the past life of M. andjMadame d'Angely aud their mode of living in Paris under assumed names. A feature of the sitting was the failure of the d'Augelys to attend in responso to the commission's invitation and testify on the subject of their alleged grievances against the police. (The commission was appointed in May last. Madame d'Angely was arrested iu Regent Street on what was described by one London paper as "an odious charge," but was subsequently released. A good deal of agitation was aroused in consequence of'the methods of the police and the case mentioned bag been frequently referred to in the House of Commons. The non appearanoe of Madame d'Angely and her husband I before the commission may possibly find Borne explanation in ,tbe following statement made when the commission was appointed by Mr George Lewis, whose firm took up the d'Angely oase:—"l'he position now is that M. and Madame d'Angely are entirely without any apology, and madame is quite upset owing to the terrible ordeal through which she haa passed, and her husband's position has been greatly preThey are people of good birth and education, but I am doubtful if they can afford to wait here for several months, particularly after the manner in which M. d'Angely's business has been pre. 1 jndioed. Madame is also afraid of j going out of doors as she fears may be again followed, and again arrested on some charge).
