BARR'S REMEDY FOR EELWORM IN DAFFODILS.
Mr .Tiilin ,T. Woods requests us to publish the following directions re treatment for Kelworm in Daffodils for tlie information of local growers : Perchloride of Mercury (corrosive sublimate) 1 part in :!000 parts water.
The beds should be watered three times during the growing season with the solution. First, before coming into flower. Second, when in full flower. Third, as soon as flowering is finished. In all cases the application should bo made after rani, or after the beds have been well watered. After applying, the plants should be lightly watered to wash the chemicals off the foliage. For the first application ]oz of nitrate of soda should be crushed and dissolved and added to each gallon of solution. For the second application the nitrate should be increased to goz to each gallon. Ihe third being as for the first. Each gallon of solution should be suftient for .10 square feet of surface. After each application the beds should be hoed to prevent evaporation. Keep the solution well stirred.
The reason for adding the nitrate is that the roots will not take up the nitrate with perchloride of mercury in combination.
This treatment is considered by Barr & Sons to destroy the eelworm in the leaves, stem and bulb and to be a complete cure.
The solution (without the nitrate) can be used for sterilising the soil of eelworm if the fallow soil is watered with it sonic time previous to planting. Perchloride of Mercury Soloids (Burroughs, Wellconie & Co.) 8.75 grains can bo obtained from chemists, each soliod being sufficient to give 1 part in 3000 to 3 pints of water. These should be throughly crushed and dissolved in a little ivatcr before adding to the full quantity.
X.B.—Perchloride of Mercury is a virulent :poison.
