DEATH OR MR J. R. MACKENZIE.

Formerly a Well-known Tapanui Settler. A cablegram was received on Saturday intimating that Mr J. it. Mackenzie, nf Ciienkenish K.statc, Pomalinka, Otago, had on that day died suddenly at his residence, UleiKoy, Victoria. During the past generation there were few studmasters more widely known in the Mouth Island than Mr Mackenzie. The Clydesdale horses, Hereford cattle, and Ifomney Marsh sheep bred at Glenkenich wero in the very forefront of these respective breds of stock in the dominion. To Mr Mackenzie belonged the distinction of having selected and brought to New Zealand the Clydesdale stallion Baron Bold, now Mr James Patrick's stud horse at Leo Creek, West Taieri. It is generally acknowledged that to the late Captain F. W. Mackenzie and his son Mr John K. Mackenzie, who succeeded him, is mainly due the fact that in the Tapanui and adjoining districts are to be found many of the best ltomocy Marsh sheep and certainly the best crossbred sheep in the dominion and the same districts have long been famous for the excellence of the breed, of Clydesdale horses to be found therein. Mr Mackenzie was in the van of the progressive farmers and stockbreeders of Otago, and until his health gave way a few years ago he took the keenest interest in the agricultural interests of the provincial districts. It was because of ill-health that ho dispersed the studs at Glenkcnich, and the same cause led him to seek the warmer climate of Vienna. Widespread regret uill be felt that one so capable of and enterprising as Mr Mackenzie was. should have been cut off in the prime of life. Amongst sporting men Mr Mackenzie was regarded as a good judge of the thoroughbred horse, and in his day he owned some first class stock, chief amongst them probably being Pallas. Mr Mackenzie is survived by his wife, a daughter of the late Mr Jas. Logan, of Greenvalc Estate, Kelso.
