EXPORT OF N.Z. APPLES.

The fallowing letter, which should bo of interest locally, was sent Ho the ftiinister of Agriculture by A. Jloritz-,-on and (Jo., Dunedin Dunedin, Aug. 17, 11)12. The Minister o£ Agiiculu..,, Wellington. Dear Sir,—No doubt you arc aware that last year considerable orders for New Zealand apples .came to hand from South America, Bio, and Buenos Ay res. Unfortunately the orders could not be taken u[j her; .is there was not suilicient fruit 0.,. ng and tho orders went to Ta ... We communicated with several apple growing centres in New /ealutul but could not get anybou; to t,-...: up the business. This coming year, ' w (Zealand should be in a position to tai>e up some of' this business, as considerable areas are gradually coming iuto bearing. We are now communicating with our friends iu South America and we expect orders for New Zealand grown fruit ; we should esteem it u favour if you will plaasa be good enough and communicate with the . various centres through your inspectors ,uul see what can be done in the matter; we shall Le pleased if anv of the growers who can supply large quantities will communicate with us. Another matter which we wish to bring before you is the most important one in regard, to space in the Shaw Savill, and the N.Z. Shipping Co.'s steamers. We believe both lines are subsidised by the New Zealand Government, and we think that ii New Zealand fruit is offering, it should be carried in preference to Tasmanian apples. There is a great rush for space by the Tasmanian shippers on the New Zealand boais, and we should le pleased if your Department would communicato with the shipping companies and ascertain the freight' direct from Wellington to ttio and Buenos Ayres, and also inquire whether New Zealand grown fruit ii offered will get tho preference fur space, and at what time beforehand vhe space requires to bo secured. The shipping mouths to South America are March, April, May, June, July. August —only dessert varieties arc wanted. It is just as well to take this matter in hand at'once, otherwise the Tasmanian shippers will have engaged all the space for the next season.
