BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Itewrence Borough Council was held' on Monday evening. Present—<His Worship the Mayor (Mr James Robertson) Crs. McKinlay, Leary, Thompson, Varcoe, Winn, Arthur, amd Mcintosh. An apology was received lor the absence oi Or. Mlunro.

Correspondence. FromjHon. Jas. Allen, M.P., thanking the Council for its congratulations.—Received, From l secretary Holy Trinity Church drawing attention to the condition of Campbellton street from Whitehaven street towards the Vicarage.—Cr. Mcintosh, Chairman of the Works Committee, said the portion of street referred to was included in ' the schedule of works to be attended to when the weather 'permitted, and it was resolved to advise writer accoi'dingly. From lit. Montgomery, notifying! that he had discontinued the use of the special water supply to Victoria stables for some time past and asking to be relieved of the special supply charge of £7 10s per annum.—Resolved that he bo charged for only three months of the present rating year. From W. Lawrence, head surfaceman, applying for a week's.holidajiin August.—Granted subject to the approval of the Works Committee. From S. F. Whitcombe, Traffic Superintendent N.Z. 'Railways, advising that in compliance with the Council's representations the railway timetablo. on the Lawrence branch would •be altered on Wednesdays and Fridays in order to connect 'with the ©xprfss trains from the 2nd September. —Received.

From tlie Valuer-General's office, Wellington, advising the authorisation of payment of £24 16s, balance of subsidy due on rates.—Received. From Florence Jones, Timaru, soliciting (ho Borough's co-operation in the matter of raising subscriptions from ladies of this district towards presentation of a silk ensign to battleship New Zealand on her visit to the Dominion.^—Li'ft in the hands of the Mayor. 'Head Surfaceman's Report. The head surfaceman reported that during the past two weeks he hurt put out sixtci n trucks of metal on Ross Place', and that, the blinding material having run out he would scraji!' Beaumont Road for balance required at first convenient opportunity ; cut the fence of reserve in Beaumont Road ; removed obstruction in Wethers tono's Ocok ; cleaned the water tables in Rc'a. and ■ Lisraoro streets ; removed the stone from Victoria stable wall, stacking away the best of it and using remainder lor filling up on back road a'" l water channel. In regard to his cmr.plaint re water overflowing footpaths he reported that only one of the parties notified hart remedied Hie nuisance complained of, and he asked for instructions re remainder.

It was resolved that the Borough solicitor-notify those who had ignored the Council's complaint that unless the nuisance was.abated lival i-r.vn .| ings would be taken against them. Accounts. Or. Lcary said tho proposal was in the nature of an experiment which in.ight prove ol great advantage or otherwise and he was favourable to its being tried. He moved that the Works Committee be authorised toongage the traction engine to carry out the work. Cr. Arthur seconded tW motion. Cr. Winn expressed strong disapproval of the proposition. The metal in Ross Place was going down fast enough and ho regarded the money to be expended in this experiment as thrown away. Cr. Christie said he had in the Old Country carried out such wor 1 .; on'ihloth county and private roads and could vouch for tho benefit it effected in tho consolidation of the roads. On being put to the meeting the motion was carried, it being further agreed that tho cost should not axceed £2 5s per day.

General Cr. McKinl-iy gave notice to move at next meeting that the motion authorising the procuring of two trucks of screenings for crossings in Ross Place be rescinded. On the' suggestion of Cr. Loury the Works Committee, undertook t 0 have the " gang way " in Lancaster street scraped. Cr. Winn asked if anything had been dona in regard to the complaint of Mr W. R. Smyth re the condition of Pladda street. Or, 'Mcintosh replied that it had bean iound Mr Tuckev had not yet done anything to remedy the crossing into his paddock, a«d until this was carried „out tho surfaceman could *ot make any improvnthe street.—Cr. Winn said Mr Smyth had very good cause of complaint and he urged that something should be done to aive him same . relief.—Or. Mcintosh said the head surfaceman had already received instructions to*carry out certain work on tho street,

The Special Committee was instructed to report at next meeting on Mr F. Martin's .application to lease small portion of Town Hall section.
