Energetic steps are being taken to develop Manitoba's new territory, which extends to 180,000 square miles and carries the boundary oi the province up to Hudson Bay. This great tract of virgin country contains valuable forests, large areas .vliich are known to be highly mineralised, and plenty oi prairie land suitable- f o r homestead purposes. These resources will be effectively opened up by the Hudson Bav Railway, the construction of which is to In; pushed forward with all despatch. Meanwhile the immediate task 'is t„ secure a largo in.lt.ux of settlers, alike |„ people the empty north and to continue the devolapm'ent of the original province, whore there is ample room for iicwiomcrs. To (his end the million for Manit«ba League is doing good service. It seeks to enlist the"active help of Viiuiitobans, individually and collectively, in adding a million inhabitants to the existing population of li\'e. hundred thousand. Land colonisation is the chief object of the organisation. Branch committees have been formed i n each district, which necks the n-operation of Hi., individual in missionary work outside Canada to swell (he tide of desirable-ei-ders. The cost of the organisation and propaganda is met bv self-im-posed coatribntions from each ..,1-ea, supplemented by a ticvermurnt grant.
