Thu above hookey teams met on the Recreation Ground, Lawrence, on Wednesday alternoon. Tho line afternoon and tho expectation of seeing a close and keenly contested game induced a ltrge attendance of spectators among whcni the fair sex was particularly prominent. The ground was in a very rough condition and also in a very sodden state, which, in -addition to militating agaiiisl the play also made it very uncomfortable for the lookers-on. The latter, however, were compensated for any material discomfort by their anticipations in regard to the exciting character 0 f the game being realised. The play of both sides was very even und victory rested with the school girls by one goal_ (secured early in the second spell. " -At the opening of the iirst spell it looked as though tho visitors were going to overrun the School team who for tho lirst few oninuies were put on tho defence, but after the School girls had •warmed- t 0 their work the aspect of the ganuo changed, ■audi for the remainder of the spell tho play was of a Very even character, first one side and then the other being called upon to defend their goal. Williua llav and Marian McCaw for the School girls played with conspicuous ability on their respective wings while Miss Cameron for the visitors proved a lower of strength, relieving her side from many dangerous positions and by excellent dribbling carried the ball to her opponents' territory. Of courso she was ably , supported by other members of tho visiting teamShortly alter the opening oi lire second spell the School n-irls carried the ball to Waitiihun-a's goal where aflur an exciting struggle Molly Fuldscth succeeded in shootini; a goal to the delight of tho legion of Schoolboy buriacki'is for the School girls. After this reverse Waitahuna played with great determination in order lo try and equalise the score and several times had the ball in proximity to tho School cirls' iroal. but their defence was apparently impregnable and on .several occasions tho visitors' goal was also in clanger but the girls were unable to increase their . score, and the match ended after a strenuous hcur's play with the score, as staled. Mr 'G, Hay 1 acted as referee and his decisions wore eminently satisfactory to both sides.
