LAWRENCE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

ANNUAL REPORT

The following is the Connnritfco's rcr pjort which will be submitted to ihe meeting of householders in the Tojvn Hell on Monday evening. . Twelve meetings of Committee wece held during the year, the attendance of members being as follows.:— J. tforrie 12, D. Mclntoah 12, C. J^affery 12, A. M. Eyes 11, D. L. Christie 10, E. Browne . nine, Row Scott^ Allan nine, A. Clarke seven, W. Anderson (who resigned early in the year) 3. flow (Committee have pleasure in submit (ing their annual report for the year ending 31st March, 1909. As wi.l be noticed from the balancer sheet the Committee retires with a credit balance of £16 5s 2<l. This satisfactory position is cine to the very liberal support accorded us by the public generally in connection with tfte concert, on behalf of the school funds, held towards the and of March. The amount received from the Board durhi"- the year for incidental purposes was £64 6s which, added to fcbe credit balance (£i 6s) from last year, gace as a total income, for ecl-00l purposes, of £6S 12s. The expenditure (exclusive of the vote for special purposes) w«is £67 15s lOd. liius showing tKat"*the amount received from -the Board failed to. meet the ordinary expenditure of the year by £3 08 lOd. It will therefore be seen that to successfully carry on the school work extraneous assistance is necessary. The liability of the £25 to tl:e Cadet Fund still exists and we would recommend the incoming committee t<o devote . a portion of tl\e pre-_ .sent Surplus in reducttion of this iriciibu 5 :.

Dining the Christmas holidays- the Board had the whole of the interior of the school calcimmed and painted and»-a!so.-a number of external repairs matte. The v various rooms now present a "brighter and cleaner appearance. Several additions to the furniture of the school are promised, amd doubtless these wJll shortly como to hand.

-The srarrlen work, under the supervision ad direction of Mr Darton, has been con-tinned during the year. In connection with this work we have to acknowledge with thanks the donation of collections of choice roses from Mr W. Fisher (Dunedin) and the rector ((Sir Stenhouse\ These bloomed freely during the past season and their ciiltivation and care were pleasing features of the garden work. The Education. -Board has undertaken to l\y the town water on to the garda-i md this will prove a g-reat ao^uisition during the next summer.

The attendance durintr the year has shown some improvement. The averace attendance tor the -Time quarter, ISOB, was 223.4, and for the March

..uarter, 1909, 232.1. The school has f ully maintained its hi?h standard of efficiency. At the various examinations 12 gained proficiency certificates, nine passed the JuxLon Civil Service. three passed mamculation , and one gained a Board Ju for Scholarship. As the result of these 'examinations the followin j appointments were received :— Alex. Lake, pupil teacher Waitahuna : L<onie Wal'-er, pi-obationer. Albany St. School, Dunedin • Gertrude McMillan, pupil teacher, Cromwell ; Bessie r.otts and Flora Ellis, admitted as ef.udents to Normal School and Uni- \ efsity ; Susannah Hunter, teacher Clarence Bridge School, Marl-borough. The 1 following, as the result of last gear's examinations, received ap1 o*ntme-its i>i Civil Service, bank, orrailway : — A. Leslie, H. Vivian, A. T7a"{ia. T. McMillan, B. Black, G. Fh dlay, R. Nforrie, G. Rowe, F. Y.Vjsiter, T. Beatson, G. Blackwell, L. Taylor, H. Bjomgaard, and R. H'aikie.

Anderson, M.'sP., for their presence and assistance at the break- up function in the Town Hall. The Ca<dc*ts. under • the control of Captain Darton, stiH continues to hold a hi?h standard of effiteiency. The Bible reading is well attended. Ihis exercise of reading t v e Biblo every morning is botand to have a lasting impression for good.
