SEVERAL CONVICTIONS.

PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION.

At the Ashburton Magistrate's Court on Friday, Mr V. G. Day, S.M., presiding, 10 sly grog selling cases were - heard.

Frederick B. Robinson, with one previous conviction, was sentenced to five weeks' imprisonment on each of two charges, the sentences to be concurrent. Annie Alexander was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence.; when, called upon. Samuel Alexander, with three previous . convictions, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Robert Paterson was fined and costs. Andrew Sutherland, Thomas Sutherland, Ellen Young and Mrs Arthur Madden pleaded guilty and were each fined and costs. Julia - Hyland, with one previous conviction, on altering her plea from c not guilty ' to 'guilty,' was fined and costs. Thomas Williams, with one previous conviction, was sentenced to five weeks' imprisonment on one charge, and convicted on two others.

When the express train conveying the sentenced men to Lyttelton gaol was leaving the station, a demonstration was made by the mob, and -one man was arrested for behaviour likely to provoke a breach of the peace. Other arrests are pending.
