ALLEGED GOLD STEALING AT MILLERS FLAT.

On Saturday Detective Cooney arrested a dredgehand named Reiderer on a charge of stealing gold from the Otago No. 1 dredge, on which he had been employed. The accused admits stealing the gold, which he had sold to Chow Kee, a board-inghouse-keeper at Alexandra, for £34. About three weeks ago the police received information that Chow Kee was coming to Dunedin to sell gold leaf, which was believed to have been stolen. The police met him on arrival at the Dunedin railway station, searched him, and found about 20oz of gold in his possession. He explained that he had got this in a mining claim at a place called Blackman's, where he haid worked between three and four years ago. The police would not believe the story, retained possession of the gold, and have since been prosecuting inquiries in connection therewith. In the meantime Chow Kee' was allowed his liberty. From time to time Reiderer rode on his bicyile from Millers Flat to Alexandra, and the presumption is that he took little parcels of gold to sell them to the Chinaman

Chow Kee was arrested at Alexandra on Sunday. On Monday the Chinaman was brought before Mr Burgess, S.M., and charged with having, on or about the 10th March, received 20oz of gold from Edward Reiderer, he (Chow Kee) knowing the said gold to be dishonestly obtained. Constable Quinn asked for a remand until the 23rd, and opposed the granting of bail. Accused was remanded, but bail was allowed, his Worship fixing it at two sureties for £50 and one for £100. The bail was forthcoming. Edward Reiderer, who was working dredgemaster of the Otago No. 1 dredge, was brought before the Court at Roxburgh on Monday morning and remanded to appear at Alexandra on the 23rd inst.
