OBITUARY.

DAVID ANDERSON HERD.

Mr David Anderson Herd, who has been a resident of Wetherstoneß since the early sixties, died at his residenoe on Sunday last after an illness extending over several years, the last few months of an aoute dfsoription: Mr Herd, was a native of Peterbead, Sootland, and in his early days followed the whaling industry. In the fifties he was attracted to the Victorian goldfields and, after spending some years on these, he decided to try his fortune in New Zealand and arrived in Dunedin by the ship Acheron from Melbourne at the latter end of 1862 and settling in Wetherstones he remained there ever since, following the life of a miner with varying success. In the early duys of Wethcratones he took a prominent part in the establishment of a school in tbe distriot, and was for years an active member of tbe school committee ; indeed, be was a man who took a keen interest in any movement that was for the benefit of the district. Deceased leaves behind him a family of four daughters and three sons (all grown up) all of whom are oooupyicg good positions. His wife pre-deoeased him by about six years. The funeral took plaoe yesterday and was largely attended, the service at the grave being conduoted by the "Rev. J. A. Will. Id connection with the death of Mr Herd it is not out of plaoe to notioe the unselfish devotion shown to deoeased by Robert Cunningham, an old mate who bad the misfortune to meet with an accident on the Ballarat Hill, whioh necessitated his being sent to the Old Men's Home 17 years ago, who when he heard of his old friend's illness left the Home and returned to Wetherßtonee in order to nurse his old mate in his last illness.
