Lieutenant Bell, a Western Australian, >x and Farrier major Hardham, a New Za»lander, mentioned for conspicuous s«lfsacrinciDg acts of bravery at JBrakpan and Kaauwpoort, respectively, have been. awarded Victoria Crosses. Dr Fielding volunteered to accompany , - the orderlies and succour the wounded at./ Italia. He was ompelled to attend to the B,oer wounded, while tbe British rem.lined in a broiling sun all day without water. There was only unskilled* attendance until Dr Kennedy's arrival. Four thousand Boers attacked Forts Italia and Proapec*, on the Zulu Und border. The British, after the fighting, buried 332 Boers. The enemy at Italia fought with dpgged ' desperation, repeatedly charging tha treciches. The enemy's fire early in the fight damaged the two 15-pounders and tbe Mcxim. \ Lord Kitchener, in congratulating M'jjr Chapman, who was in command at Italia, said that but for the defenders' fine stand the result would have been disastrous. Of the outpost which made such a brave resistance on Italia Mountain 14 escaped, while 37 were captured. Tho latter were released, after carrying the ! B)er wounded to Babanango. A. body of volunteers and ecouls near Hnlpmaakar, a short distance from Lady smith, had a collision with a vanguard of 150 Boers. Three hundred and fifty of ihe enemy looted a few head of cattle a*. Pietpotgietersrust. Two hundred Boers attacked the mis* eion station at Bothabella, with the view* of obtaining provisions, but were re» pulsed. Major-general Stephenson has BUOcecded General Beataon in command of the columns operating in Southern Cape Colony.
