ENORMOUS RAILWAY

TRAFFIC. From a careful compilation of returns, it would appear as if the rather startling total of 43,500 persons visited Dunedin during the week of the Royal visit. The exact figures are not available except as regards the railway traffic between Clinton and Donedin and Oamaru and Dunedin. Taking from the 80th to the 26ih Junt, inclusive of both datel, the arrivals in town from stations between Clinton and Dunedin were 13,000; andfrom stations between Oamaru and Dunedin 8,500. It is estimated that about 10,000 Teame from the Inveroargill district, which includes, stations beyond Clinton, but thn precise figures are not yet known, and about 1000 from Christchuroh. In addition, it is estimated that about another 10,000 hoi ling season tickets visited Dunedin during tbe week, and then there has to be taken into account volunteers (456 1, sohool children (460), and teachers and friends (62). All these figures, as before stated, go from the 20th to the 26th June inclusive, and they total up to the 43,500 persons. It may be readily imagined with ench a heavy passenger traffio the railway offioials had considerable difficulties to contend against, but these they managed to overcome in a most creditable manner, and, beyond a few of the many trains that had to be run not arriving quite up to time, the arrangements were generally carried out in an entirely satisfactory manner.
