WAITAHUNA NOTES.

: [Own Cohbbspondbnt.T The remains of the late Mrs Wept wen in* terred in the Havelotck cemetery on Sunday, 3O.tn Jane. ,4 very large number of friends from all parts of the Waitahuna aistripj, *j4

tome from Lawrenoe attended the funeral. The body war Jfeken* from the late residence of deceased 1o Bt. Matthew's Ohureh where % ■hort but impressive service was oonduoted by the Rev. Canon Richards, the rev. gentleman referring in feeling terms to the active interest deceased had taken in church matten, •specially in leading the praises of the sanctuary. One of deceased's favorite hymns, " There ia a rest for the people of God," was sung. Rev. Canon Richards also oonduoted the service at the grave. Tbe de. eeaeed lady will be much missed not only by tbe Anglioan body, but by all who bad the pleasure of her intimate acquaintance, being much admired for her kind, unselfish and obliging disposition. There is a good deal of sickness amongst U9 at the present time, Mr Burnett's family of Waitahuna Gully, being the greatest sufferers. Tbe youngest, a little boy of about two years, died from soarlatioa and was laid to rest in the Havelock cemetery on Saturday last, the 29th June. Six more of the family are down with the same sickness. Mrs Barnett hai also been very ill, but I am glad to state she is now on the way to recovery. Altogether it is a very trying time for Mr and Mrs Burnett, more especially as, owiDg to the nature of the disease, friends and neighbors oannot give the help they wonld like to extend. We have. had a severe frost for the last seven or eight day* with oold, raw, foggy mornings. The ground has been too hard to admit of much ploughing being done, so the principal work on the farms for the last week or bo has been tending the &took and trimming fences. A public meeting is to be held in the Good Templars' Hall on Saturday first, the 7th instant, the objeot in view being to consider the best means to adopt in order to get the road from Waitahnn* to Waipori put in a fair State of repair. It is surprising that the people in and around Waipori do not rouse np and agitate in this matter, for it is they Who have to pay for. all. A few hundred pounds spent on this road would be a lasting benefit to them. . The freight on ooal, etc., Could be considerably reduoed and the neoessaries of life procured muoh otoaper than they are at the present time. Young Cowen, who had his hand amputated through the accident at the Milton railway station, is getting on well, but is still at Milton under the care of Dr Sutherland.
