SOME LAWRENCE STATISTICS. A fn llier batch of statistic has been received by us from the Government Printing Office relating to law and crime iv this eolouy. Under the heading of civil cases brought before the District Courts in New Zealand during 1895, liawrence is put. down with one case, in which the amount sued for wao £200. This case was afterwards discontinued. In the table showing the ttansact.ions in bankruptev'forthe period ending December 31st, 1895, Lawrence is put down with six, of which two were from £50 to £100, two from £100 to £250, cne from £250 -to £500, and one from £500 Io £1,000. Tho total amount of liabilities as per statements filed (exceeding amounts secured to credit rs) was £1690 12s 6d, while tbe amount of assets realised by tbe assignee was £930 12s 3d. 1 here were no criminal cases tried before the District < ourts during 189$ In the Magistrate's Court, however, there were during the same period ' 57 persons taken into custody — 55 males j and 2 females. Of these 57, 10 were j discharged for want of evidence, 5 males and 1 female were dismissed on the merits of the cases, 7 males were committed for trial, and 33 males with 1 -female were suramarity convicted. Of these 34 couvictions, 5 were for offences against tlin person, 2 for offences against proporty, 7 for drunkenness, and 20 for other offences. '1 hirteen offenders were fined. In the civil cases, 173 plaints wero laid, 125 cases^tried, and £1,284 : 4s sued fo n , while judgments were given for £909 14s Id.
