MINING

The Dunedin Dredging Co. did not wash-up last week.

A new goldfield has been discovered in tbe Alexandra district (Victoria.) Two brothers raised five tons of stone, from which they got over 290z of gold.

The Reefton miners have come to terms with Mr Ziman and have accepted nine shillings per day. The strike is, therefore, ended, and work was resumed last week.

Last week's gold returns of the following dredging companies are to hand: — Golden Treasure, 41oz ; Otago, 18Joz ; Jutland Flat, 38oz Bdwt for 136 hours' actual dredging ; Upper Waipori Co.'s No. 1 dredge 7oz 6dwt for 129 hours' dredging and No. 2 dredge 9oz 3dwt for 131 hours' dredging.

Our Millers Flat correspondent informs us that the Golden Run dredge has lately been shifted out well into the river, and that the manager is looking forward to better returns of the precious metal.

The Tuapeka Flat Dredging Company successfully launched the pontoons of their dredge, which they have just finished building, on Saturday last. The pontoons measure 60ft by 24ft, with a well-hole of 30ft. There are 22 buckets on the ladderway, with a capacity of 2J cubic feet. The machinery, which will comprise a 25-h.p. double cylinder high-pressure engine, with locomotive type of boiler, two steam winches and pumps, is expected to be on the ground next week. The dredge has been built by the owners (Messrs Uren and party) under the supervision of Mr John Bennett. The machinery is being supplied by Messrs Postlethwaite and Stevenson, Dunedin. The party will commence operations at the junction of Gabriels Creek and Tuapeka Eiver.
