LOSS OF THE COLIMA.

News was received at San Francisco on May 29, the day before which the Mariposa left there, that the Pacific mail steamer Colima had foundered off the coast of Manzanillo, Mexico, on May 27. Only fourteen of the passengers and five of the crew were known to be saved. They reached Manzanillo in one of the steamer's boats. The Colima left San Francisco on May 18 for Central American ports and Panama, with a heavy cargo, forty passengers in the cabin and thirty-eight in the steerage, besides forty-three Chinese. The Colima had been in service since January, 1874, and was built at Chester, Pennsylvania, at a cost of £120,000. Among the lost are Professor Harold Whiting, of the University of California, with his wife and four children, who was proceeding to the East to enjoy his vacation. The Colima was docked a few months before, and her boilers (the bursting of which caused the disaster) were then cleaned, bnt not thoroughly overhauled, as they were considered good for several years. The Colima made one or two trips to New Zealand when the Pacific Company had the San Francisco mail contract.

Achmed Wotelegel, who helped Slatin Pasha to escape, has been hanged by order of the Kalipha. Achmed believed himself secure from discovery, and returned to Omdurman. But the Kalipha's police had had suspicions. The servants of Slatin were threatened ; red-hot pans were ready to be pressed upon their heads, and in view of this terrible torture they confessed who had last been in communication with their master before his flight. Acbmed was executed, his house burned down, and his wives and children made slaves.

One reason for the beauty of Japanese sewing, fancy work, and embroidery is that it is all done by professionals. Women have little use for needles, and spend their leisure time in gardening. Sad Memories. — "Isn't it sad," asked the young lady, romantically, "to think of the roses of yester year ?" "It is," replied the youDg man, emphatically. " I have an unpaid florist's bill for £35."
