"BILL" BERESFORD'S PLUCK
One of " Bill " Beresford's smartest performances was whilst he was with his regiment at Cork. The barracks stand high, and "Bill" was dared by a fellow officer to drive a four-in-hand down from the summit. He accepted the challenge, and with ita bet of £50. Then he got his four-in-hand, took off all the wheels, and drove down with perfect safety to himself and the horses, if with some slight damage to the vehicle. Here is a trifle about one of his many dashing deeds in the battlefield. A man's horse had been shot as he was riding away from the Zulus, and Lord William, who passed him at the moment, called out : " Get up behind me !" The man demurred, on the ground that the animal was not equal to the double weight, and they would both be killed. " Look here," cried " Bill " (and here spoke a Beresford all over), " if , you don't get up I'll get down and punohj your head !" — Exchange. ______________ It is'reported that the Hebrew emigration from Russia this year, voluntary and assisted, will amount to about a quarter of a million souls.
