The Family Homes Protection Bill of the Minister of Lands proposes to prevent family homes not exceeding £1000 in value with improvements from being mortgaged or sold for debt. The measure is certain to receive strong support. Calls to the Legislative Council. It is freely stated in Wellington that immediately a change of Ministry at Home was announced, the Governor took firm ground re the calls to the Council and refused to accept dictation from the Government. His attitude has surprised and cowed the Government, and it is understood the Premier has now practically abandoned all hope of putting any nominees into the Council this session. Had the Liberal Government at Home remained in power, the Premier woul<i have insisted on making further appointments to the Council, and very likely over-ridden the objections of Lord Glasgow.
