RAILWAY TRAFFIC RETURNS.
During the four weeks ended January 6 the railway receipts amounted to £111,513, and the expenditure to £52,499. In the corresponding period of the previous year the revenue was £110.773. and the expenditure £52,198. The North Island lines contributed £42,227, as against £42,277 ; and the Middle Island lines £69,285, as against £68,495. The North Island lines absorbed £19,001, as against £18,388. The Middle Island lines absorbed £33,496, as against £33,809. The proportion of revenue to expenditure on the several lines, calculated on an annual average, was for the respective periods of 1894-93 as follows ;— North Island: Kawakawa, 94.33, 79.84; Whangarei, 71 47, 79.92 ; Kaihu, 88.82. ; Auckland, 66.33, 66.46 : Napier-Taranaki, 64.67, 63.68 ; Wellington, 64.67, 67.48. Middle Island : Hurunui-Bluff , 62.09, 63.67; Greymouth-Brunner, 53.67, 63.25; Grey-mouth-Hokitika, 26.13, ; Westport, 55.88, 51 73 ; Nelson, 105.33, 93.88 ; Picton, 107.50, 104.57. Grand total, 63.54, 64.47. The following are the detailed returns of the Hurunui-Bluff section for the same period : — 1894. 1893. Passengers — s. R. s. b.
