OCCUPATION OF LAND IN OTAGO.

RURAL SELECTIONS IN DEMAND. RUSH FOR HOLDINGS ON THE OTAGO CENTRAL. A large number of rural holdings, many of them being subdivisions of pastoral runs, were opened to intending settlers on Thursday at the Dunedin Land Office. The total acreage thus opened for selection was 23,000 odd acres, in eighty-seven lots, and of these j thirty -five lots were applied for, and when the ballot was over at luncheon time Friday j 15,245 acres had been taken up. Mr Cullen conducted the ballot under the supervision ! of Mr J. P. Maitland, Chief Commissioner, and at the latter's invitation the would-be selectors selected one from their number to assist in the ballot, Mr W. F. Inder being appointed to perform that duty. There was a particularly large demand for selections on the Maniototo Plains, the district being commanded by the Otago Central Railway, and we understand that nearly if not quite all the applications for these areas came from persons living in the interior, who may be supposed to know what the land is capable of earning when the locomotive rims close to the land. The unlucky number 13 proved successful thrice during the ballot, and on one occasion No. 1 was the first drawn out of fifty marbles put in, while another selection went to the last on the list among thirty-eight. The following is the result of the sale : — FIRST-CLASS LAND.
