RAILWAY OVERCROWDING.
A decision of great importance to railway companies and the travelling public was recently given at the Birmingham (England) County Court;. A local solicitor sued the Midland Railway Company for damages for discomfort and inconvenience caused by overcrowding. The plaintiff, a first-class passenger, complained that third-class passengers were forced into his compartment without his consent. The judge ruled that overcrowding was a breach *of contract. First-class passengers could object to thirdclass passengers. J adgment was given for 40a, with leave to appeal.
A city merchant failed in 1879, and paid fourteen shillings in the pound. Fortune having since smiled upon him, he has reoently paid hia creditors the balance of six shillings, with interest,
