THE VALUE OF AN UMBRELLA
How a life was saved by an umbrella is told by Felix Kraemer, one of tbe inmates of the Royal Hotel, New York, which was destroyed by fire on February 7, when a number of persons were burned to death :—: — " Had I not had a Btrong umbrella, I should either have been burned or killed by jumping," said Mr Kraemer. " I have been burned out at hotels three times now. At a fire at Warrensburg, Me. , a guest escaped by using an open umbrella to r\j,se his flight from an upper storey wine, tv. I never forget it, and since have always been provided with a strong umbrella tor an emergency. As soon as I reached the window I opened my umbrella and quickly and carefully put a strap over it so as to prevent it from turning inside out, then I made a leap. I did not go sailing gracefully out into the air and land lightly on the ground beneath, but I landed without any broken limbs, and am all right now. jrhe umbrella partially turned inside out just before I reached the ground, and I got something of a jar, but I should think myself lucky if I had escaped with a broken leg, for I never before saw a fire burn so fiercely as the one which consumed the hotel."
