LAWRENCE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the abovenamed body was held on Monday evening, and was attended by the Mayor and Crs Walker, Hetherington, Arbuckle, Fraer, Johnston, and Chalmers (W) The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The Paymaster-General wrote stating that the sum of 3s had been remitted to the credit of the borough fund account for fines collected for the quarter ending 31st March for breaches of the borough by-laws. — Received. Mr J. Hetherington made application on behalf of Messrs H. Craig and Co. for permission to lay two 4-inch iron pipes across the footpath in front of the firm's new building, Beaumont Road. — Granted. Mr W. Anderson, janitor, wrote stating that he had had a lot of extra work to do in cleaning the Town Hall during the past quarter, and as he had to employ labour he requested a small allowance to recompense nim. — It was resolved to allow applicant an extra 30s. Mr it. O. Potts applied for permission to take a few loads of clay from the embankment in Thurso-street at the junction of Maryport-street ; he would undertake, if his request were acceded to, lo leave the embankment with the same slope as at present. — Application granted, subject to the approval of the Public Works Committee. Mr John Thompson, on behalf of Mr Chas. Swftnwick, wrote stating that Mrs Harrop was agreeable to allow the Council to take whatever area was required off the section at the rear of the Town Hall that she had leased from the Council in order to allow a roadway being formed to Mr Swan wick's bakery. — Referred to the Public Works Committee for report at next meeting. The Secretary of the United Districts of Otago Charitable Aid Board forwarded a return showing that outdoor relief was granted in the suras stated to the applicants named : — Mrs Adams and family, 7s 6d per week ; J. E. Bromley and wife, ss; Thos. Geeres, ss; Mrs O'Kane, ss; Mrs E. JPowler, ss.— Received. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were referred to the Finance and Public Works Committees for payment : — Lawrence Bros., £3 11 4d ; Walter Anderson, £5 ss ; W. Watson (Inspector of Nuisances), £1 13s 4d; Geo. Walker, £1 4s. GORSE NUISANCE IN GABE.IELS-ST. The Inspector of Nuisances was requested to report on the gorse nuisance in Gabriels-street at next Council-meet-ing. NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr Arbuckle gave notice of a motion to the effect that a general rate of one shilling in the pound be struck on the annual values of all rateable property in the borough for the period commencing on the Ist April, 1892, and ending on the 31st March, 1893, and that the water rate for the same period be sixpence in the pound.
