TOO UTTERLY TOO TOO.

The Government are about to undertake a big thing in the way of economy. It is bigger than anything they have ever before introduced in this direction, and although some persons may say that that might not be much, we eaa pass the sneer over with the expression of opinion that the person who would doubt it must be a Tory of the starchiest pattern. The Government 'propose to send the Hineraoa to Sydney to bring over Lord Glasgow and his suite. Usually our Governors have been allowed co get into the country the best? Wav they could, and get out of it under somewhat similar conditions. A change is to be introduced by the democracy. The country is nourishing to such an extent that we can now afford to send the Hinemoa to Sydney to bring over the Governor and his suite. Sir Pertinax Macsycophant says the pliability of the back in genuftexonial obeisances is the surest method of obtaining wealth and power — that to " boo " ceremoniously and sufficiently gives footing on a gilded pathway to eminence. The Government are about to make their first " boo " to new greatness, and we hope their Liberal backs will not crack with the majestic sweep of obeisance. The Hinemoa is certainly a fine steamer, but the Union Company has dozens of better, and while the Governor would not be quite monarch of all ha surveyed in one of them, he would at least be monarch of as much as he liked to pay for ; and as he is, from all •iccounts, able to pay his passage-money to the colony, he should be left to do so. Tbe Governor will no doubt appreciate as much as any*one the pleasure of being left to arrange his own way of reaching the colony, especially when the financial condition of the colony 13 considered. Again, what docs all this " booing " on the part of the Government mean ? They surely do not intend to bring under the notice of his Excellency on the trip across the unparalleled and inextinguishable hankering the people of this colony have for the appointment of fifteen new Legislative Councillors ? If Mr Buckley (who goes in the Hineraoa to meet the Governor) returns from Sydney with the promise of fifteen in his pocket he will have achieved something that will entitle him to the applause of his colleagues ; but if he fails, the cost of sending the Hinemoa will be thrown away on a will-of thewisp. The money, it may be said, is the colony's, and it doesn't matter. But it does matter. — "North Otago Times."
