TUAPEKA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The above Society hold their annual exhibition in the Town Hall on Thursday and Friday next. The Society's prize-list is usually a large one, but we believe the one arranged for the present occasion is the most attractive yet offered. But the strength of the exhibition as well as the best proof of the Society's popularity is to be found in the number of special prizes, most of them of a very substantial kind, whioo they find themselves in a position to oSev ,-, J 5 hes J c Presented, it must be remembered, m addition to the usual cash prizes, and the object apparently is to encourage the production or cultivation of such flowers or vegetables as may com mend themselves most strongly to the donors. This is the most valuable feature of the speaial prize-lisfc. It creates a keener and more aspiring spirit of rivalry, brings out in clearer and more deended contrast the quality and excellence of the ex. nibits and provider a more encoura.frins' stimulant for the exhibitors. The progress which the society has made is very creditable ; and to those gentlemen who have so closely and laboriously identified themselves with, it from its inception is due the honour of its success. There are none of our annual gatherings more deserving of support than the Horticultural Society ; and we are glad to see that this fact is recognised in the most practical manner by the public.
