THE WAIPORI RACES : ANOTHBB VERSION OF THE STORY. (To tlie Editor) Sir, — Through, not being able to see the majority of the stewards of the late race-meeting 1 I was not able to reply any soouer to Sir Carpenter's letter in your issue of 6th January. In that letter he misrepresented the action of the stev -ards at the meeting on 29th December. The ruie he quoted should read as follows :— " Whenever two horses, the property of one owner, go out for a race, it shall be considered a walk-over, and the winner shall be only entitled to half the amount of the stakes." Mr Carpenter was made aware of his having omitted the words " The property of one owner," and after some discussion Mr Clufley proposed " That consideration of the question be deferred till a fuller meeting." By doing this the mover of the rule, and the whole of the stewards who were present wlien the rule was formed, could give their opinion. Mr Carpenter opposed this motion, and it was withdrawn. He knew well the stewards would never adhere to what can be only characterised as a deliberate attempt to defraud Mr Butler of his money. The majority of the ste.vards, including the mover and the seconder of the rule, now declare that Mr Carpenter was wrong. Mr Carpenter's motives regarding how the public money was spent are not favourable ones. For a number of years he has taken a prominent part at the race-meetings here ; but when his own friends won the lion's share of the money he said nothing about it. It is to be hoped that his successor will be a mau who can mind his own business, and if he sees fit to express his opinion through the Press, shall have more regard fir truth and fair-dealing than the late secretary had. — I am, etc., James Bolton. Waipori, 2nd February, 1892.
