LAWRENCE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The regular meeting of the above named body was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Monday evening, and was attended by the Mayor and Crs. Fraer, Johnston, Taylor, Hetherington and Chalmers ("W".). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confimed. CORRESPONDENCE. The Paymaster-General wrote intimating that' the sum of £75 8s 4d had been remitted to the Council's credit, being subsidy (75 per cent on £100 11s Id) under the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act, 1885, and section 89 of the Appropriation Act, 1891. — Eeceived. Mrs Laura Adams made application for an increase in the amount she received as charitable aid from the Benevolent Institution Trustees. She had formerly been in receipt of 12s 6d, but the amount had been reduced to 7s 6d. — It was resolved to recommend the Trustees to raise the amount to 10s per week for six months. Mr D. Cochrane drew the Council's attention to the encroachment of gorse and broom from Eden-street into his i garden. — Referred to the Inspector of Nuisances with power to act. WORKS REPORT. Mr Uren, Inspector of Works, sub- \ mitted the following report.: — I have the honour to report on the varions streets that have received attention since last meeting of the Council. The footpath on the north side of lona-street has been graded and the water-table cleaned for a distance of ten chains, and is now in good order. The footbridge in Lism ore-street has been repaired by renewing a portion of the decking, also some six-inch drain pipes laid for a distance of 27ft and covered over to improve the appearance of the street. The tarring and sanding of the footpath on the west side of Whitehaven-street have been continued for a distance of about 10 chains, opposite section 14, block IX. I inspected the Corporation water-race on the 29th ult., and found it in good order. In the meantime the caretaker has renewed the race in Campbell's and Quartz Gullies as mentioned in the specifications for keeping the race in order. i The report was received. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were referred to the Finance Committee for payment: — Jas. Wilson, £8 8s ; W. Anderson, £6 17s 6d; Jas. White, £1 10s; P. Uren, £13 9s 3d. RENOVATINO THE TOWN HALL. Four tenders as follow were received for renovating the Town Hall : — A. Moody, £236; G. Hodges, £220 ; A. Ferry, £186 ; J. Egglestone, £179 10s.— It was resolved to accept the lowest tender. This was all the business. The Czar intends to restore the system of serfdom in Samara and Saratoo districts, and, if successful, it will be extended to the whole Russian Empire.
