MINING NOTES.

The mine manager of the Island Block [Extended Gold Company (Limited) reports under date 27th inst. :— " I have not got the channel yet. lam still working up the river to catch it. The bottom is dipping gradually. The washdirt is looking better but not carrying much gold yet. lam going to sink in the mouth of the creek close to Sheehy's old house. I expect to be on the main outlet there, according to the grade the reef is dipping at." The manager of the Roxburgh Amalgamated Mining and Sluicing Company reports as folows:—" Washed down both elevators on Friday. No. 1, 60oz 7dwt llgr, 248 hours' sluicing ; No. 2, 370z 2dwt 2gr, 207 [hours' Both elevators shut down ; water done."

The Miller's Creek Gold Dredging Company obtained lOoz 12dwt of gold for 123 hour's dredging last week. Mr J. R. Perry, who was recently on a visit, or inspection of the United Hercules Hydraulic Sluicing Company's works at Roxburgh, has furnished tho following report to the directors : — "About the beginning of June last, before leaving for England, Mr Dalziel and myself visited the United Hercules, in order to confer with the raunager and fix the plan for future operation;! when the ground immediately adjoining the river should be worked. We selected the ]>la':e where your former manager (Mr Peters) had left off with the richest gold, so that, whichever way the gold might be found to run, it might be followed. Those instructions have not been carried out, Your manager appears to have taken upon himself to commence a large paddock on known poor ground, and to have run a cut parallel to the former workings, resulting in a heavy loss to the company. I think some inquiry should be made by whose direction he was led to do this. He has now arrived within 30f.t or 40ft of the place where he was instructed to comaience, and the last yield of 40oz iudicates better returns. Unless the gold has run out altogether I now expect fairly good returns down to the boundary of No. 2, provided the work is vigorously and intelligently carried out." The Upper Waipori Alluvial Gold Dredging Company obtained 19oz of gold from No. 1 dredge for five day 3 thirteen hours, and 9oz 12dwt 12gr of gold from No. 2 dredge for three days sixteen hours' dredging last week. The Croesus mine, Nenthorn, has just turned out a cake of retorted gold weighing 1440z, representing the crashing and rough cleaning up of 104 tons of stone. The manager reports having driven from the new winze for a distance east and west of about 100 ft through new ground, and at a depth of 50ft from the surface. The stone continued good in every direction, and is strong under foot, the reef averaging from l^ft to 2Jft in thickness. The secretary of the Jutland Flat Goldmining Company reports for the week ending 30th ult. 320z 9Jwt gold for 144 hours' wages time.
