The manufacture of brandy from Australian wines, as carried on by Messrs Joshua Bros.' promises' to open np a new branch of Victorian industry. Over two years have passed since the firm in question embarked upon the euterprise, and they have now accumulated a stock of 150 000 gallons of brandy, which it is their intention to endeavour to place upon the English market. It is claimed that this latest extension of local manufactories will have a beneficial effect upon the growing wine industry, seeing that within the last two years alone Messrs Joshua Bros, have purchased no less than 90,000 gal. of Victorian wines, mainly from the Rutherglen district, where the great alcoholic strength of the grape renders it peculiarly suitable i for distillation, and express themselves as ready if ceed be to supply a quantity equal to the whole Victorian consumption ( of 280,000 gallonß annually. The system in vogue at Messrs Joshua Bros. Port Melbourne Distillery is supervised by experts brought out from Europe, and it is claimed tbat it includes the double-distill-ing refining process employed by James Hennessy and Co. A good story is told as to the new Bishop of Durham's visit to Windsor to pay homage to the Queen. When his Lordship reached the castle, accompanied by Lord Knutsford, the discovery was made that neither of them had a copy of the oath. In vain was a messenger despatched to to the Bishop's residence in search of the missing document. The position was serious. In sheer desperation a message was despatched to the Home Office, asking that the terms of the oath might be telegraphed direct to the castle, and tlm was done, but the shave was bo close that there was no time to make a copy of the telegram, which was read as it was received from the local telegraph office.
