I (From our own Correspondent.) Dunedin, January 19fch. The Premier left for Wellington this morning. The Minister of Mines remaiua in Dunedin. At the meeting of the Synod to-day, an | application for a church site at Lawrence was refused. To-day a painter named Parker fell through a skylight on to the footpath, some 14 feet, but escaped without breaking any bones. It ia reported from Wellington that trouble is likely to arise over prospecting in the King Country. Tawhiao has been advised to bub for trespass. Some natives acting under his instructions have stopped parties engaged in road-making. The Heriot and Kelso School Committees have nominated Messrs M'Kenzie and Farnie for the vacant seats on the Education Board. At a meeting of the University Council yesterday, Mr Frank Ogaton, M.D. and CM. of Aberdeen University, was appointed lecturer on Public Health and Medical Jurisprudence, at a salary of £200 , per annum. It is stated that should the Wellington people insist upon the stoppage of the building of Mount Cook prison, th& prisoners will be distributed throughout the Colony, and the central prison will be built at Blueakin.
Miles and Co., of Christchuroh, have received a telegram stating that a further reduction in dock charges for the ■torage of frozen mutton is likely to be made. The .whole of the members of the Cabinet, excepting Sir Julius Yogel, will meet At Christchurch on Thursday for the purpose of conferring with His Excellency the Governor and Admiral Tryon on the question of Australasian defence { matters. It is probable that Samoan affairs will also be discussed.
