GERMAN COLONY IN NEW GUINEA.

Very discouraging reports have recently appeared respecting the value of the German acquisitions in the west of Africa, and now (says the Home correspondent of the " Argus ") the New Guinea Company have felt compelled, in answer to innumerable questions from all parts of the empire as to the conditions on which settlements may be made in Kaiser Wilhelm's Land, to give public notice that circumstances are not yet favorable for German emigration to that part of the world. The Chairman of the company (Herr von Hausemann) explains that stations have not yet been erected on the coast, that the interior has not been sufficiently explored, and that the regular ship communication has not been established between Kaiser Wilhelm's Land and Australia. But the company has sent out several expeditions, and is fitting oqt more, for the purpose of remedying the former defects, and that being done (within the space of a year, it is hoped) the necessary information will then be given to intending emigrants. Acquisitions of land made without the consent of the company would not be recognised. Although, as compared with last year, German emigration is declining, still during the first nine months of 1885 some 88,000 have left the Fatherland. Tbe German Colonial Union have resolved to send a commission to search out and secure proper localities for German settlements in the southern provinces of Brazil, especially in Rio Grande do Tul. The scheme has not been received by the public with much warmth.
