THE MAXIM GUN.

Our contribufor " W. A.R.," who wrote, some time ago, a serieß of articles on the "Defences of England," sends n.s the following :—": — " Positively the newest idea" in gunnery ia the Maxim gun. Seldom has an invention met with greater unbelief than this one. But in spite of unbelief it has conquered and the thing is there. Briefly, it consists of a tube 4ft 3in long, mounted on a stand 3ft 9in in height, looking, in fact, not unlike an amateur telescope. To the breech end is affixed a band containing a supply of cartridges. You just set the thing going, and the shots come quicker than you can count, five a second, so that it has been said a gunner could easily write his name in bullet marks on a board 500 yards away by merely turning his wrist. Nice little machine, eh? Providence, we are told, fights for the big battalions, but I think they hadn't heard of Maxims andNordenfeldts in those old days— the days of Talavera and Waterloo.
