The Earl of Devon made an offer of 10 per cent, reduction in the rents of his Limerick tenants, which was accepted after a stormy meeting. In a riot in Londonderry on August 21. 40 soldiers beat a crowd of civilians, whereupon the latter turned upon the soldiers, and the picket guard had to be called out. The guard were obliged to carry fixed bayonets in eelfdefence. Order was with difficulty restored.
