BAZAAR AND GIFT AUCTION AT ROXBURGH.
(From cur own Correspondent,)
The bazaar and gift auction in aid of the funds of the Tuapeka Hospital and Otago Benevolent Institution, which was held in the Athenaeum on Thursday last (23rd inst.), was a great and complete success. The bazaar commenced about one p.m. The stalls were filled with an assortment of fancy goods, and the ladies — Mesdames Mackay, J. J. Smith, Mercer, Andrew, and Misses Scully,* ' OudaiUe, and Mackay — who presided at the stalls fulfilled their duties as to the manner , born. Talk about tact in displaying the different articles : those who were there know how strong that tact was by the time they got to the door. Once outside, you would hear such remarks as the following : — " Well, did you ever see the like of that now ?" " Here, I went ' i in just because I fancied one of these vases, and look at me now j I hare got a - basketful of all sorts. What a great blessing it was that I had no more money about me ; for if I had there is no telling how far I would have gone, for they just did with me as they liked." Another, who is well-known as a hard-nut, upon arriving at the door and taking a quiet survey of the number of articles he was carrying away with him, and wishing to destroy any impression that those meeting him would have that he had been " got at," said : " I had no idea I required so many things until after I had gone in." More instances could be given, but this is quite enough to show how well and effectively the ladies did their duty. The gift auction started a little after seven p.m. Mr Burton generously gave 'his services as auctioneer, and was 'kept hard f \ at it till 12.30 a.m. The building was crowded with buyers, and the ''bidding was brisk. 'Messrs R. M. Smith, 'Haugliton, Murdoch, Morris, Mercer, Smith, Cockburn, and others had their work cut out for them passing round the various articles, taking cash, &c. A number of the residents of the district
