SOCIAL GATHERING AT EVANS FLAT.

At the invitation of Mr W. Johnston, a largo number of the friends and wellwishers of Mr C. W. G. Selby met at the schoolhouse, Evans' Flat, on Wednesday evening, to take farewell of that gentleman, who is leaving for Lumsden, where he has been appointed headmaster of the school. Mr S. Henry (Chairman of the School Committee) occupied the chair. The schoolroom was nicely decorated with evergreens, and the word "Farewell" was worked in ferns at one end of the room. The room was fairly crowded with people, and apologies were read from several who were unable to attend. . In opening the proceedings, the Chairman aaid they had met that evening to bid farewell to Mr and Mre Selby. Mostly all present had an opportunity of knowing them during the last three years. In that time the school had passed three very successful examinations, and for his part he was very sorry that they had to part with such an efficient and able teacher. As for Mrs Selby, he felt sure that the ladies and gentlemen present would agree with him in saying that a quieter and more unassuming lady had not lived in their midst, and that all would join with him in wishing them a" prosperous and bappy future.— (Applauae.) Mr Henry then called upon the choir for some music, after which several ladies and gentlemen contributed to the evening's entertainment by giving songs, recitations and addresses. As one item of the programme, Miss Munro (on behalf of the Sunday School teachers) presented Mr Selby with a handsome gold ring. Mr Selby thanked them for their good wishes. He believed the gift had come freely from them. He would value the gift very much, and think kindly of the donors wherever he went. Later on in the evenin, Miss M. Fahey (on behalf of her fellowpupils) presented Mr Selby, as their teacher, with a very, nice silver chain and pendant. Mr Selby said that he was quite taken aback this time. Schoolmasters had often to thrash their pupils, and this was how they returned the compliment. A lady had told him that she did not envy the life of a teacher ; for if she had to teach children she would be likely to kill some of them. He had never killed any yet, and evidently the children had not taken ill with the killing. After singing "Auld Lang Syne," the company ad % • journed to the school residence, 'where a sumptuous feast was spread, for which tha committee of ladies who arranged matters deserve commendation . It is not necessary to describe this part of the proceedings : suffice it to say that when all had gnashed their teeth to their heart's — or, perhaps, stomach's— content, an adjournment was made to the schoolroom, where, to the dulcet strains of music sweet, tbe giddy mazes of the whirling dance were entered into with whole-souled spirit, and kept going till the rooster's deep-voiced clarion drowned the strains of the concertina and violin. Everything passed off in a very happy manner, and all who attended the gathering enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The ladies who managed the whole concern deserve praise for the entirely successful issue.
