DraßDitf, January 20th. At this evening's sitting of the Synod, the Rev.- W. Bannerman was presented with SOOsovs, subscribed by the Presbyterian Church throughout Otago.

0. (Special to Press Association.) * Wellington, January 19th. Au accideut occurred abou t four o'clock ,this ' afternoon on the Wellington Mauawatu Railway . Company's works at Pukerau, about 24 miles from town, which resulted in three men being buried underneath a fall of earth in a tunnel. It appears that twelve men were working in g, 1 tunne| in Mr Brown's contract, when , l\\e timber suddenly gave yay, and a large quantity of earth fell. Nine of the men managed to escape, but the other three . were, when the las-t report was despatched to town, still entombed. Their names are • Pet er George, Henry Lloyd, and Matthew »- Tanaadeth. The voice of the last-named can be heard, and he states that he can jjear .one of t the other unfortunate men groaning, but is unable to tell whiph it is. (Heater's Special.) Caiiio, January lGth. Telegrams from the Soudan report the arrival at Gakdul of Colonel Stewart's ,en-> I tire forco. January 17th. The latest telegrams from Korti state that Colonel Stewart left Gakdul with the A troops on Wednesday, and will arrive on Sunday at Metemneh. The Naval Brigade, who were - fimon« the first detachment sent forward to Metemneh, have already proceeded to Khartoum in a steamer provided by General Gordon. London, January 18th. Mr H. O. Forbes, the explorer, sails for New Guinea early in February.

The heads of tho Kabbabis tribes have joined Lord Wolseley. A sharp fight has taken place with the rebels at Ondurman (query, Anderman, close to Khartoum), during which the latter sunk a steamor.

The test case argued before Judge Chitty with the view of deciding the liability of transferees of shares in the Oriental Banking Corporation has been decided in favor of Victoria being allowed to rank as preferential creditor. It is not considered probable that Mr Wilton, the Official Assignee, will appeal . It is expected that an Adelaide loan will be placed in the market iv March. Barnum, the Adelaide showman, has refused the offers made to him respecting the Claimant, Sir Roger, who h;is recently been discharged from gaol.
