THE CHORAL SOCIETY'S LATE CONCERT.

f To tU Editor J Slß,—ln reply to " Fair-play," allow me to state that no encores are allowed at the Society's concerts, so that I had no povrer hi the matter, At any rate the item— " He wipes (he Tear" — being in the sacred part of the programme, encores could not be given. I fail to see the bad taste of a conductor doing as he is instructed by his Committee. The same performer sang at the Society's last concert, and received twice the applause for her* item ; but I suppose having bean taught by myself, "Fair-play" did not think it necessary to take notice of the fact thnt I allowed no encore then, though the item did not appear in the sacred half of tbe programme. I can only say no one was more pleased at the young performer's singing than myself, and I have always tried to get the young members of tbe Sooiety to como forward, showing no favoritism to pupils of my own, which, of course, is what •' Fairplay" means. — I am, &c, Edwabd Towsey,

Conductor Lawrence Choral Society.

Sib, — If " One who believes in Fair-play were conversant with the usages of tbe Society, he would know that it is not considered tho correct thing to grant encores when sacred pieces are sung. I have taken part in many sacred concerts, and attended maty at which the best professional singers in England assisted, but such a thing was not thought of. I think tbe young lady who sang the piece referred to by your correspondent fhcmld be satisfied with the applause she obtained for her singing, in which I very heartily joined, it being, in my opinion, the gem solo of the sacred portion of the concert. If it had been a song with a rattling fol-de-rol-10l chorus, or something of the "Cease rude Boreas, blustering railer " type, an en core might have been looked for. " One who believes in Fair«play " is simply making himself and the lady referred to appear ridiculous by scribbling upon a subject of which he appears to know very little.— l am, &c, An oid Chobai. Society Man.
