London, October 3rd.
Telegrams are to hand from Hayti, West Indies, stating that a serious native rising has occurred at Port-au-Prince, the capital. A large body of blacka entered the town and attacked the foreign merchants, several of whom were killed, others being severly maltreated. The rioters also pillaged the business premises and private houses of the merchants, committing great havoc. A body of marines from the men of war in port was landed to quell the outbreak, and in the encounter which took place with the rioters, several of the marines were killed. Rome, October 3rd. It is currently reported here that his Holiness the Pope is seriously ill. Hongkong, October oth.
Intelligence to hand from Canton state 3 that much alarm is felt by Europeans in that city on account of the excited and threatening attitude of the natives. Fears are entertained that an attack may be made upon the European quarters, and gunboats have arrived in the river in readiness to afford protection to Europeans and their property in case of necessity.
