A shocking case of murder and 'suicide is reported this evening. George Timothy Stephenson (formerly a quartz reefer at Cromwell), who had been living separate from his wife, but who has been continually annoying her of late, to-night followed her from Saunders, M'Beath and Co.'s, and in Manor Place apparently attacked her, an explosion of dynamite having been heard suddenly. Stephenson was found standing with his head blown open, and she was found lying down near his feet, her head also being blown off. Naturally there is great excitement about it in the City. The very sudden death of Mr Alexander Stuart, second son of the Rev. Dr Stuart, occurred to-day. The deceased, who had been treated by Dr Conghtrey, for some time pa3t, for congestion of the lungs, went to bed last night apparently in the best of spirits, and he was found dead in his bed this morning. It is feared that he took some cyanide of potassium (which was in a bottle in his room) by mistake for his medicine. Mr Stuart, who had studied chemistry, had been repeatedly warned by his medical attendant as to the danger of keeping two similar bottles, with conteuts so different, alongside each other. An inquest will probably be held to-morrow. The Gaol Commission sat again to-day. The evidence was of the usual character, and nothing beyond what has been stated before was elicited. The Commission go North on Monday, and will sit in private if Mr Caldwell is uot represented by counsel.

At the Supreme Court to-day, the jury disagreed in the case of Moran, who is charged with arson, and a fresh trial will take place. The jury are now considering their verdict in Minter's case of embezzlement.
