WJENTT-NYB PERSONS DROWNED. C*foljp.jiews_was received in Dunedin at lhe" New "Zealand Shipping Company's office of the loss of the Company's ship Waitara. The telegram received was as follows :—: —
" Hurunui and Waitara, both outward bound, been in collision in Channel. The latter sank. >■ Twenty-six lives lost. Hurunui put back ; will have to discharge and doclr/-
The following 4 telegram from Christchurch, where the head office *Qf the com* pany v situate, gives fuller information, and shows that 25 ((not 26) persons were drowned : — ' ' . : i Chbistohxjkch, June 25th. Mr Gibbs. of the New Zealand .Shipping Company, has received cable advice of the collision of the Waitara and Hurunui, of tfflshsailing of which he had received a cablegram dated June '21st. TH**Waitara dank, 'and 16 of her passengers and crew were saved, including the piaster, chief officer, and an apprentice named Worsley. Twenty.five of the passengers and crew, with an apprentice nauftfd'Ootterell, were drowned. ' The Httrunivput back,, and.will have to dißchargb andudock; i .She was bound for Port Chalmers, with a full cargo. ' The Waitara was bound for Wellington/ also with a fall cargo.
It is not known who the officers were, as since the establishment of. the line of steamers, changes have been very frequent.
