ROAD TO ANTIMONY MINE.

(To tfie jvaitor.)

Sib,— l noticed a paragraph in your last issue stating that Mr Cotton (member for Waipori Hiding in the County Council) was opposed to the expenditure of any money on the road to the antimony mine via the Old Chimuey. He preferred that the amount of, Government subsidy (£200) Bet aside for rendering that piece of road fit for traffic should be expended on the road leading from the mine to the Waipori township, and he actually got the Council to instruct the Engineer to visit the district and report on the matter. Now, I. should like to expose Mr Cotton's little game : lam convinced in my mind that he is anxious to divert the traffic to the mine from Lawrence, in order that it may pass through Waipori township and thence on to Waitahima. Of course the Waipori business-people would gain a benefit as Mr Cotton terms it, .but that gain would be at the expense of Lawrence. It is folly to attempt to make a dray road from the mine to Waipori township, because the expense would be great, and the route would be unsuitable to teamsters, whVwould be obliged to travel a farther distance of fifteen miles before reaching the railway station. I am confident when the promoters of the antimony mine see through Mr Cotton's little move, they will be down on him at once ; for they have made several applications to the County Council to put the road via Gardner's track in passable order. That body promised on more than one occasion to do so, and I don't think Mr Cotton should interfere with the allocation of the Government vote. — I am, &c , B

iUSINESS-MAN.

Lawrence, 18th January.

A passenger from Sydney to Parramatta was recently fined £5 10s for not paying his railway fare, which was 9d. Sir Robert George Wyndham Herbert, permanent Under-Secretary for the Colonies, now created a X.C.8., received his political training in Queensland. He accompanied Sir George Boweu to that colony on the inception of responsible fovemment and he was made the firat 'remier. . So popular was he that at one time he narrowly escaped being thrown into. the river by an infuriated mob.
