(Associated Press Telegrams.) Invehcargill, January 17th.

Indignation is felt at the reported recommendation of the Government to the Governor to commute the sentence of Walsh, the Waikaia murderer, to imprisonment for life. The "Times," this morning, has a strong leader on the matter, arguing that there were no extenuating circumstances of insanity whatever ; that the plea advanced by the prisoner's Counsel at the trial fell to the ground against the weight of evidence ; that the grounds upon which it was attempted to commute the sentence were not even referred to-at the trial. It says : "If ever a man deserved hanging, that man is Janes Walsh." The article concludes by demanding that the law's award should be carried out.

The result of the poll for Mataura election was declared to-day, when the Returning Officer announced that Mr Shanks was returned by a majority of 59. Both candidates addressed the electors. Mr Kinross bitterly attacked Messrs Joyce andFeldwick, M.H.R's, for what, he considered* a gross breach of confidence displayed by them at the outset of the election.

On information from Chiistchurch the police, at about midday, arrested a young man named Edward Bastings, late stationmaster at Waihola, for uttering a forged cheque for £7 ss, purporting to be signed by the General Manager of Railways, to one Henry Allen, a publican at Christchurch.
