WAIPORI.
(From a Correspondent.)
A public meeting wns held on 3rd inst., at the Oddfellows Hall, Waipori, to receive the report of the committee appointed to inspect the Waipori falls and report as to the practicability of constructing a storm channel to open up the lower part of the Waipori flat. After receiving the report and some explanations by the committee, it was resolved that a committee be appointed to take the necessary steps to bring the matter before the Government, and urging that immediate action be taken. After the meeting closed, the Miners Association Committee held their monthly meeting. There being nothing of any importance to bring before the Committee, after some business of a formal nature had been transacted, Saturday, 7th June, was appointed for the next meeting, and the proceedings closed. On Tuesday, May 6th, a public meeting was held in the Oddfellows Hall, when a memorial to the Superintendent, praying that an engineer be sent by the Government to inspect the Waipori falls, and report as to the best plan for constructing a channel to drain the Waipori flat, was submitted to the meeting by Mr. H. M'Cay. The memorial, which set forth fully the benefits which would accrue to the district were such a channel constructed, and the large extent of known auriferous ground which would thereby be rendered available for mining, was unanimously adopted. It was resolved that the memorial be left open till the 10th inst. for signature, and that steps be taken to secure as many signatures as possible by that date. A permanent committee, consisting of Messrs. H. M'Cay, J. Vivian, R. Buchanan, J.Ritchie, and R. Pilling, was then appointed to act generally in the matter until it is finally decided upon. Votes of thanks were then given to the retiring committee and chairman, and the meeting closed.
