Jan. 15, 1871

A Petty Sessions Court sat at Mataura Bridge on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Dr. Menzies, Chairman ; Messrs. Turnbull andM'Nab,J.P.'s. J.M'Lean, Tuturau, was charged by Constable Purdie, with having a dog on his premises withont being duly registered on 2nd Nov., 1870. The Court fined him L2, and 6s 6d costs. H. L. Squires, Mimihau, was also summoned under the same clause of the Dog License Ordinance, and lined L2, and 6s 6d costs. I may add that a number of settlers in this neighbourhood have suffered great loss and damage by useless dogs killing their sheep. The settlei's have exexpressod their approbation of the steps taken by Mr. Purdie to check the nuisance. People should not keep useless dogs without being registered, and if so, they deserve to be justly fined.

Mr. Cameron, who keeps the hotel on the Southland side of the Mataura Bridge, has got notice to quit, (it being a Government building) so that it may be converted into a Police Camp and Court House, a want that has been much felt since the population has become so numerous in the Tuturau, Mokereta nnd Toitois districts. The nearest Police Station to these places being Tapanui. The constable attends at the Petty Sessions Court, Mataura Bridge, monthly.
