LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

An adjourned meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers, on Friday, the 13th inst. Present— the Mayor and Crs. Coverlid, Meara, Barnett, Uren, Williams, Harrop, and To>vu Clerk.

ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were referred to the Finance Committee : — Nicholls, £1 12s. 6d. ; Town Clerk, £18 15s. ; M'Coy, solicitor, £9 9s.

The petition from a large number of ratepayers, with reference to the tailings at the mouth of Gabriels Creek, was again brought forward.

Cr. Coverlid moved that the petition be received. — Carried.

Cr. Meara remarked that he was requested by some of the ratepayers to put something into shape to lay before the Council with regard to the silting up of the tailings in Gabriels Creek, and thus backing up the water on tlie Wethersfcones Creek. No one, he was certain, would question the advisability of bringing the matter before the Government. The Government had now granted Gabriels Gully as a main tail race, but that grant could only extend to the town boundary, beyond which the Warden had no power. It becomes then the business of the Council to ace that the matter is brought prominently before the Government. The residents thought as Mr. Reid and Mr. Macaudrew were coming up, some steps might be taken to bring the subject before them ere matters got worse. He would move that the Council, as a body, wait upon Mr. Reid and Mr. Macandrew when these gentlemen visit Lawrence.

The Mayor questioned whether, during the visit of those gentlemen, it would bo a fitting time to bring such an important matter forward. They must so act as to show that the Council have no desire by any factious opposition to interfere in any way with the Blue Spur workings. It became the Council to protect the ratepayers who were owners of large properties, and also to facilitate the workings of the Spur. He thought if the matU r was brought before the Public Works Committee, and they brought it before the Warden, it would then be the duty of that gentleman to bring this subject before the Government and get some permanent work carried out, by which the evil would be averted. There was no doubt if the creek were allowed to rise as I at present, it would be very destructive to property.

Or. Meara quito agreed with the remarks of the Mayor ; withdrew hia proposition and moved that the mattor be referred to the Public Works Oonimittee, and that they consult the Wardeu aa to the boat plan to be adopted to meet the evil. The motion wa3 seconded, and carried. The assessment roil was then laid on. the table by the assessor. The Mayor called over the assessment roll, Y/hieh gave every satiaf action. Or. Coverlid moved that the assessment. be received. lie was well satisfied with ■ it. The motion was seconded and carried unanimously. T his brought to a close the principal business of the meeting,
