Under these circumstances it is very likely that July 13 will be the day on which the formal opening of the line will St Gotthard Tunnel.—The St Gotthard tunnel, which is to be used to establish direct railway communication between Switzerland and Germany, is making slow but steady progress. The sum of £1,250,000 has been already expended, and 2000 yards have been constructed.
